Have been working on this post for several days, lacking a title. It’s a close-up look at the various threads (pun intended) of the extra-curricula workings of a creative person.
Lest anyone think applying line, pattern, texture, function & design to clothing a foolish pastime, consider some of the technical (engineering) challenges involved in putting them all together successfully in a 3-dimensional garment that’s made from the inside out, must withstand movement and frequent cleaning, and reflect the personality of the owner/wearer.
It’s engineering of the most complicated sort, as it involves mental and physical requirements.
However, the weekly WordPress Photo Challenge gave everything some order.

Have been staring at my copy of Vogue 8813 for some time, trying to decide whether or not to make it up and with which fabric. . . Thoughts, anyone?
Fellow sewers in the U.K. can check out the YSL exhibit now at The Bowes. “Fashion fades, style is eternal” (He showed jumpsuit in 1968!) Details here.
Am getting ready for an Autumn Morris with inspiration from Grainline & NYC’s Mood Fabrics. It’s arrived & ready for me to pick up! ! ! More anon…
Why am I lusting for yet another lagenlook-style pattern when I’ve not sewn the one I own? It’s all lovely sewchet’s fault! Sheila’s made the most delectable 3 outfits, 2 self-drafted here & here, that’s why! What’s lagenlook? See Thursday’s Curvy Sewing Collective’s post here, featuring “my” pattern.
More 🍁🍂 inspiration from a library copy of Tove Fevong’s Totally Simple Crochet… have to figure out if it’s American or Continental stitches.
Reading & thoroughly enjoying Why women cry : or, Wenches with wrenches, by Elizabeth Hawes (1903-1971), published in 1943. On-line at Internet Archive.
Need to order Przybyszewski’s The Lost Art of Dress:The Women Who Once Made America Stylish which is fascinating & led me to the Hawes book, amongst others.
More order restored to the chaotic pile, and the heat wave broke. What more could a person ask? 😉
no more heat waves 😍, that’s what.
Oh. And does anybody have a good recipe for wholemeal digestives?? McVitie’s are almost $5 USD a packet. Gasp. AGHHHHHHH ! ! !
I did pick up the Tilton dress pattern as well. I’m drawn to the solid colors of views A & B, but am hesitant as well. I’m only 5’2 and already have a large rear. I’m not sure if that would make things better or worse… I also bought and didn’t sew the Sandra Betzina one for the same reason. Honestly, I didn’t know what Lagenlook was until I read the curvy post! You know, we should try it together since we both have that pattern? What about a testing Lagenlook sew along =D Kind of like scheduling a play date with friends and test drive this unique style for our curves with moral support!

Applaud your suggestion about a group sew for Lagenlook styles! Let’s get together off-blog & sort details. Dare we aim for August? I’ve probably got the mostest time, being sans family, etc. . . .

Oh, wow, okay. I could do August. I’ll have to dig through the stash and start thinking when I get home next weekend.

I thought the first pattern was very ‘sewchet’ then I read the rest and then Sheila comments. That looks an interesting pattern, I have something similar that’s rtw but it’s made out of a heavy smooth jersey in taupe and black. Looking forward to seeing yours & sheilas 😀

Hi – hope your week’s going well! You didn’t say how you like your RTW… ? Does the jersey have much stretch? Would love to hear your comments !

I loved it – it’s a bit small now and shorter than I wear now too! It was a 2 way stretch , stretchy but not too stretchy, if that makes sense! 😀

Yep, gotcha – thank you!

I’ve got the Vogue 8813 – it’s my Minerva Craft make for August or September and I’m making it in bright red linen:)

Thank you, Sheila! Lovely colour for you – I love red! Did you get 100% or cotton-linen? The blends over here tend towards heavier, fray-if-you-look at ’ems. Splurged on a bit of handkerchief linen & am trying to decide how to make it up. It’s been laying on the cutting table all week. waiting . . .

55% linen, 45% cotton from Minerva Crafts, not Calico Laine this time. I haven’t made it yet so can’t comment on the fray factor:)

Hope it doesn’t! Think you’ll d the pattern straight, or hack it a bit?

At the moment I’m inclined to do it straight but that might change as I get stuck into it!

Love the Lynn Mizono pattern – what are your reservations/

everything about it, from length to width, particularly that as am afraid i’d look as wide as tall in it.

Ah! I take you’re point – us mere mortals aren’t all six foot plus, size 6 models.

Totally agree. The “average” model is much taller & skinnier than “normal” and is very 2-dimentional (i.e., no protruding bits), so designers don’t have to design in 3 dimensions.
A proper croquis would have 3 parts: front, back, and side views. It’s the side view that most designers don’t do. And that’s where you fit for sway back, slumped shoulders, tummies & derrieres, etc.
Think about a grocery sack. It looks great with perfectly flat boxes inside, but bulges unattractively when there’s a sack of apples, a cabbage, and a head of lettuce inside.
But shops ha’ve taken that somewhat into account with flapped/folded 3-dimensional bags.
Sorry to carry on so . . .

I see what you mean. Yes, 2D very different to 3D. Do you follow Sewchet? (I think I’ve seen you commenting on her blog) She’s a ‘real’ person and recently made something a bit similar and looks fab in it.

Yes, Dear Bekki, I follow Sheila of sewchet, and mentioned her in the above post. She’s done some stunning things, hasn’t she! She’s going to join a few of us in a Lagenlook sew-along, and you’re welcome to join us. Give it some thought. Meanwhile, your previous message gave me an idea for another post, which I’ve been working on, so back to it! xx

Sorry, I forget your mention of Shelia – had been a couple of days since I read your post. She certainly makes some fab things. Thanks for the invite to the sew-along, but I’m afraid I’ve a heap of sewing projects that aren’t getting attention, and I’m a rather tied up 😉 in things yarn at the moment. So, although lovely to join in, I really mustn’t get anything else on the go. Good to hear my comments gave you an idea for a post. I look forward to reading it 🙂
